Together for Change – Wind for a sustainable future: The Nordex Group Publishes its Sustainability Report 2021 and Sustainability Strategy 2025

In the 2021 reporting year the Nordex Group once again contributed to accelerating the end of the fossil-fuel age. The current energy market challenges and the decisions taken at the 26th World Climate Conference in Glasgow show that greater efforts need to be made to limit global warming to 1.5°C. As a manufacturer of innovative onshore wind turbines we work together with our customers and partners to raise the percentage of renewables in the global energy mix. Sustainability is at the very heart of our business model and we seek to explain this transparently in our comprehensive Sustainability Report. We are convinced that doing business sustainably is essential – not only to the future viability of the Nordex Group but also to preserving our environment for future generations.

This is why we are pursuing a holistic approach, which is specified in our new Sustainability Strategy “Together for change – Wind for a sustainable future”. The Strategy provides the foundation for our actions and includes our core sustainability topics from 2022 onwards. The Nordex Group has summarized these in seven strategic key topics within the four dimensions of “Our Products”, “Environment”, “Social” and “Governance”, and has set itself specific, measurable goals:

  • Our Products: Sustainable Products
  • Environment: Climate Change and Decarbonization; Environmental Protection
  • Social: Fair & Attractive Employer; Occupational Health & Safety
  • Governance: Responsible Sourcing; Business Ethics, Integrity & Compliance.

For the 2021 reporting year, for the first time we are additionally publishing our business activities’ EU Taxonomy-eligible revenues, operating expenses (OpEx) and investments (CapEx) in accordance with Article 8(2) of the EU Taxonomy Regulation 2020/852 for the environmental goals of Climate change mitigation and Climate change adaptation.

As every year, the simultaneous publication of the Nordex Sustainability Report and Annual Report is an important milestone in our sustainability reporting. The Sustainability Report comprises the separate consolidated Non-financial Group Statement, which serves to fulfill our legal obligations and has been audited by the auditing firm PwC.

Initial outlook: Our new sustainability goals from 2022

As part of our new Sustainability Strategy we are focusing on emissions reduction, have joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and are planning to define our binding contribution to the 1.5°C climate target. We also intend to reduce our occupational accident rate (LTIF) to under 1.5 (per 1 million working hours) by 2025 and further anchor responsible and ethical action in our supply chain. The continuous further development and optimization of our products are at the center of the new Strategy: We want to further reduce the CO2 footprint of our wind turbines and achieve the full recyclability of our rotor blades by 2032.

Evaluation of sustainability performance to the end of 2021

With our Sustainability Report 2021 we are also evaluating the previous Sustainability Strategy (2019-2021). We can report the most positive developments, for example, concerning the reduction of the occupational accident rate (LTIF) and lowering the relative waste volume by 23%, as well as the new training programs and measures for Diversity and Inclusion. By the end of 2021 we also achieved the target of sourcing 100% of our electricity from renewable energies.

Our successful sustainability engagement initiatives are also recognized by leading sustainability ratings: For example, the Nordex Group was awarded the EcoVadis “Gold” medal.
