Meet the Team Nordex – Jonas Adamsson, HSE Officer

Jonas Adamsson works as an HSE Officer for the Nordic region at Nordex Group. Jonas explains HSE as a service and expert function regarding health, safety, work environment and quality. Jonas is based in Sweden and with around 10 years of experience in the company within different fields, he has a broad repertoire and an interesting story within Nordex.

Jonas explains that his working days can vary a lot as he regularly attends client meetings, does Service Point inspections and conducts risk analyses. “Almost every day I get questions from Service Technicians. They might ask if specific clothing or equipment is acceptable from the safety perspective or they are requesting me to help with a risk analysis about the possible safety issues with something they are about to do.”

Another important part of Jonas’ job is investigating observations. This kind of investigation is carried out when a problem has occurred or, in the worst-case scenario, someone has got injured while working. After receiving an incident observation, the HSE department starts to look into what has gone wrong. “The goal is to investigate what has happened and what you could do to make sure it never happens again”, he adds.

Jonas when he worked as a Technician

When visiting a Service Point to do an inspection, one essential part of the process is to look into how chemicals and waste are being stored and taken care of. Various checklists are used during an inspection, one of them being 5S. 5S is about having all the right things in the right places – and not having too little or too much of anything. Jonas also says that with his experience in the field, he has tested many different solutions on how to make a Service Point the best it could be and he tries to contribute with what he can with his background.

Jonas’ story at Nordex started back in 2011 when he attended a Wind Power school in Strömsund. When it was time for him to do an internship, he had problems finding a place and was very eager to get a position at Nordex, thinking he could go anywhere in Sweden. Nordex eventually found him a place at a windfarm in Munkedal. He said yes straight away without knowing where the place was located.

“I am from Northern Sweden and have never had any ambitions to leave that place. I checked online where Munkedal was located, and was crossing my fingers that it would be located in the north but it turned out to be on the west coast”, he says laughing. To his surprise Jonas liked it there. And after the internship in 2012, he got a job at Nordex as a Service Technician. After some time, he became a Lead Technician, a role he had for a couple of years. During his time as a Technician, Jonas got interested in safety questions and when the opportunity came to assist with HSE topics, he thought it was worth applying for. He soon started to work as an HSE Support and finally became an HSE Officer in 2017.

Jonas clarifies that in the HSE department one mainly works with problems such as accidents, people who have issues to be solved or a Service Point that needs to be improved. This can be quite challenging but even though the job can be tough, Jonas finds it really rewarding. You don’t get too many opportunities in life to be a knight in shining armour. In my job you get a lot of chances to help people and to make their work life better”, he adds.

One of Jonas’ proudest moments at Nordex was when he improved the quantity and quality of safety observations. Jonas says that when he began working within HSE, he started off a little awkward and tentative. However, he soon started to make calls and ask questions to get a better understanding of the real issues. He also created campaigns and pushed people to make them prioritize health and safety. During one year, the number of observations had increased tenfold in Sweden and the quality of inspections improved. The amount of LTIs (lost time incidents) in Service operations also decreased, which Jonas thinks could have something to do with his efforts.

Regarding what happens next in Jonas’ Nordex career, he mentions that he recently started to study Work environment engineering with a focus on construction which is a two-year education. After his studies, Jonas hopes to be able to contribute to Nordex with even more knowledge. Since Jonas also has the experience of what is like to work in the turbines, he knows what kind of problems his colleagues face in that environment and hopes to be able to assist them even better in the future.
