The\ninitiative, launched today in a virtual event, is unique in its scope and\nambition, representing the founding members\u2019 joint response to the urgent need to\ndecarbonize the global energy system while ensuring its sustainability from an\nenvironmental, social and governance (ESG) perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global\nAlliance for Sustainable Energy brings together utility companies from diverse\ngeographies, major manufacturers in the wind power and solar PV supply chains\nas well as sector associations and innovation partners. The 17 founding members\nare, in alphabetical order: <strong>3M, Adani Green Energy Ltd., EDP, Eletrobras,\nEnel Green Power, Global Solar Council, Global Wind Energy Council, Goldwind, Iberdrola,\nJA Solar, Nordex Group, NTPC Limited, Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di\nTorino, ReNew Power, Risen Energy<\/strong> and <strong>Trina Solar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have to\nact now \u2013 and act together \u2013 in making a serious commitment towards\ncarbon-free, sustainable energy,\u201d said <strong>Salvatore Bernabei, representative of\nthe founding members of the Global Alliance for Sustainable Energy, <\/strong>and <strong>CEO\nof Enel Green Power<\/strong>. \u201cWe will pursue our mission to make a collective\nimpact in embedding sustainability across the entire value chain by leveraging\non core, shared values: responsibility, respect for human rights, protection of\nthe environment and biodiversity, but also open collaboration and\ntransparency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global\nAlliance for Sustainable Energy aims to redefine the meaning of \u2018sustainable\nenergy\u2019 and embrace all those working in and impacted by renewables, joining\nefforts with civil society, end-users, policymakers, academic institutions,\nmaterials suppliers, Original Equipment Manufacturers and likeminded utilities\nto interface with governments and investors. The initiative is fully aligned\nwith the 2030 agenda set out in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While wind\nand solar have distinct characteristics as renewable technologies, they are highly\ncomplementary and share both similar growth trajectories and similar challenges\nto their sustainable deployment. Closer alignment between wind and solar is\ntherefore critical for accelerating the energy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe wind\nindustry has a crucial role to play in cleaning up the dirty parts of the\nglobal economy such as steel, cement and heavy transport but also to decarbonize\nour own supply chain at the same time,\u201d said <strong>Ben Backwell, CEO of the Global\nWind Energy Council <\/strong>(GWEC). \u201cWork on the wind industry\u2019s own sustainability\nis already under way as we move from pilot projects to a full-scale industry\napproach, addressing challenges such as circular economy solutions to blade\nrecycling and protecting labor practices and human rights in a rapidly\nexpanding workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeyond its\nclimate impact, solar power can make a significant contribution towards the Sustainable\nDevelopment Goals thanks to the \u2018ripple effect\u2019 that fans out into the\neconomic, social and environmental domains, benefiting areas such as health,\neducation, gender equality and poverty alleviation,\u201d said <strong>Gianni Chianetta,\nCEO of the Global Solar Council<\/strong> (GSC). \u201cWhat is key is a joined-up effort.\nIt\u2019s no longer enough for any one technology, industry or organization to lead\nthe way: we need to lead together, with collaboration and joint action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch\nof the Alliance comes at a critical time for climate action and the energy\ntransition, just two months ahead of the United Nations\u2019 COP26 climate summit\ndue to take place in Glasgow. Meanwhile, the latest scientific assessment from\nthe UN\u2019s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that the\nworld is off track to limit global temperatures increase to 1.5\u00b0C above\npre-industrial levels or even keep them well below 2\u00b0C, as set out in the 2015\nParis Agreement, and has indicated that the planet will warm by 1.5\u00b0C in the\nnext two decades without drastic moves to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. UN\nSecretary General Antonio Guterres said this scientific consensus \u201cmust sound a\ndeath knell for coal and fossil fuels before they destroy our planet\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pathway\nto keeping global heating within the limits set by the Paris Agreement is\nnet-zero by 2050 and climate action needs to be stepped up to reach that goal. In\nthat scenario, almost 70% of electricity generation globally would come from\nsolar PV and wind power, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).\nRenewable power technologies, led by wind and solar PV, have already stepped up\nto dominate new installations of electricity generation, as they have become\nthe cheapest sources of power in many markets. In the past seven years, according\nto the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), more renewable power was\nadded annually to the world\u2019s grids than from fossil fuels and nuclear\ncombined: in 2020, the dominance of clean technologies over traditional sources\nclimbed further with 260 gigawatts of renewables-based generation added\nworldwide, more than four times that of other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch event\n\u2013 <strong><em>The Sustainability Mission of the Energy Transition: Presenting the\nGlobal Alliance for Sustainable Energy<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 will feature speakers from\nfounding members, who will provide perspectives about how their own\norganizations are already actively working towards the Alliance\u2019s vision for\nsustainable energy. That will include roundtables addressing the topics of\nsustainability in the renewables supply chain and progress towards net-zero\ngoals. External experts will provide insights on key topics for the Alliance,\nincluding: <strong>Dante Pesce<\/strong>, former chair and current member of the UN\nWorking Group on Business and Human Rights; <strong>Heidi Huusko<\/strong>, Senior Manager,\nEnvironment &amp; Climate at the UN Global Compact; <strong>Peter Paul van de Wijs<\/strong>,\nChief External Affairs Officer, Global Reporting Initiative; <strong>Michela Miletto<\/strong>,\nDirector, UNESCO Programme Office on World Water Assessment; and <strong>Meredith\nAdler<\/strong>, Executive Director of Student Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 17\nmembers of the Alliance are set to work together to tackle the sustainability\nchallenges in this transition and bring results both in the short and the\nmedium term. They start their collaboration by focusing on four key areas where\nthey can achieve quick wins for the sustainability of the renewable energy\nindustry, aligning different players by setting and harmonizing standards and\nmetrics, around which common targets can be set, and aligning around best\npractices. The focus areas are: <strong>net-zero emissions and CO<sub>2<\/sub>\nfootprints; circular economy and design; human rights; <\/strong>and the<strong> water\nfootprints<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alliance is open to new members who share this vision and can contribute concretely towards the ultimate goal of becoming a truly sustainable industry within the transition to net-zero by
