Nordex N90 (2.3 Megawatt)

To make optimum use of wind power potential at inland locations, Nordex offers the N90, a fully certified wind turbine with an output of 2.3 MW. Certification of the power curve, noise emission levels and grid compatibility has been granted by independent institutes.

The 90-meter rotor achieves its full nominal output even at relatively low wind speeds, ensuring that high yields across the entire wind spectrum can be achieved at inland locations.

Type testing has been completed for tube towers of a height of 80 and 100 meters and for a lattice tower of 105 meters. A further advantage is that with a hub height of over 80 meters it is possible to use sites which until recently were not viable for technical and economic reasons. The N90 with its high hub height opens up new options particularly in forest locations, complex terrain with high roughness and regions with relatively low wind speeds. Measured in terms of specific space requirement, the installed electricity output of the turbine offers maximum efficiency.

A further advantage of the N90 is the low noise emission. At a wind speed of 8.7 m/s, a level of 103.6 dB (A) was measured in accordance with the FGW guideline – an advantage in heavily populated non-coastal locations. The extended electrical properties of the turbine ensure that the N90 already complies with various international grid connection rules.

Rotorblades

In our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Rostock, built in 2001, we manufacture some of our rotor blade requirements in 12,000 square metres of factory space. The rotor blades NR45 (N90) are built using the vacuum injection method. This method involves placing the glass fiber in a vacuum so that the structures can absorb the resin. As a result, consistently high product quality is ensured and on-site safety enhanced. In addition, Nordex is employing a new coating method which has proven to be highly weather-resistant in practice.

Operations management

The N90/2300 is controlled by Nordex Control 2 (NC2), a software/hardware system for managing the central wind power system components right up to wind farms or the power station networks of non-centralized energy producers.  The software system continuously evaluates all operating and weather data measured and ensures yield-optimized operation of the system. To this end, Nordex programs each system with turbine and location-based parameters. The wind turbines are fitted with two devices (anemometer) to record wind data. The first one is used to manage the system and the second one monitors the first device. If one device fails, the other takes over.

Each system is linked to a remote monitoring system for controlling the components (hardware and software). In this way, all data and signals are transmitted by ISDN and can be viewed using an Internet browser. This ensures data monitoring as well as active remote management (e.g. start-up, deactivation and wind tracking) for each turbine from the Nordex service center in Rostock. The remote monitoring office works around the clock and is automatically alerted in the event of any deviation in operating data from standard parameters. The system is backed by an emergency power supply. Together with the batteries fitted to the pitch system, the system is deactivated securely in the event of any loss of power.

In addition, the turbine can be fitted with a condition monitoring system to ensure proactive maintenance. This early warning system alerts the operator when a component needs to be replaced in the foreseeable future. In this way, it is possible to avoid an unscheduled shutdown.
